A movie about the Targa Florio is coming
the early Targa Florio Race story that is being told by the upcoming movie Pistons, Passions and Sicilian Pleasures and the publication The Belle Epoque of the Targa Florio Races, a new book written by David Biggins and Antonio Lombardi
The first Targa Florio was organized by Italian enthusiast Vincenzo Florio in 1906. The race at that time was a three lap event over a 92.7-mile circuit on the island of Sicily. Alessandro Cagno in an Itala won the event, taking 9.5 hours to finish, while averaging 29 mph for the run: Carlo Graziani was second in another Itala, and Paul Bablot in a Berliet was third. Florio a prominent Sicilian had previously initiated the Coppa Brescia held in Italy and first run there in 1900. It was renamed the Coppa Florio in 1905 after he offered the initial prize money and a trophy for the race.

thanks to director Edoardo Vojvoda for bringing this short movie to my attention, and sharing it with us!
Just to point out a teaser, for anyone ont he fence about committing to watching a 16 minute film... the Iso Grifo Competizione... is one of 10 made, and his was found as a basket case int he Canary Islands, but restored by Modena who built it, with the assistance of Bizzarini himself

the 341 Challenge is on for 2014! "America's most challenging hill climb" returns to Highway 341 on the weekend of June 14
Just thirty minutes south of Reno Nevada and 40 minutes east of Lake Tahoe lies the most dangerous stretch of highway in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and quite possibly, the entire west coast - Nevada State Route 341.
Amir Rosenbaum. Amir is the founder of Spectre Performance, a manufacturer of innovative air intake systems and other performance parts for muscle cars. Aside from owning a fleet of cars that includes several 1970s Chevrolet Camaros, a mid-engined 1970 Chevy El Camino SS (pictured above), a 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1, a 2JZGTE-powered 1970 Ford Maverick, a twin turbo Cadillac powered streamliner land speed racer, and a highly modified 1992 Ferrari F40, Amir set a world record at the famed Virginia City Hillclimb in 2002, driving his infamous F40 up the hill in only 3.10 minutes
from http://motormavens.com/tag/spectre-341-challenge/
The event was started by Rosenbaum through his air-intake company Spectre Performance, and it remains cheerfully brash: Minimal safety requirements (no roll cage is necessary, for instance) and a run-what-you-brung ethos pave the way for all sorts of exotics and insane tuner cars to take a crack at breaking the 3-minute, 41-second barrier. The 3:41 Club awaits.
For two days, there is no traffic on Highway 341. The cops play along in this part of the country, while residents welcome the aural deafening and tourist dollars. The road exhibits typical DOT-grade maintenance: loose gravel, road signs, crowned sections, gleefully ignored double yellows, a potential for roadkill. There is no prize. The risks are real: Around every one of those 22 frequently blind corners is the threat of falling through a flimsy guardrail -- or no guardrail at all -- and disappearing into the scrubby brush. "If you go off on turn seven, for example," the 341 Challenge site explains, "you'll probably have enough time in the air to make out your last will and testament before you hit something for the first time." Accidents happen. One competitor died in 2010, while driving no less than a 1,000-hp Porsche.
How challenging is it? In 2010, the year Rosenbaum launched the 341 Challenge, 18 drivers signed up. Only six of them made it into the 3:41 Club.
info from http://www.autoweek.com/article/20140128/carnews01/140129884#ixzz2tAw8D6es
With an entry fee of just $341, two full days of racing up the course built into the program, and relatively relaxed rules (basically, cages aren’t required, and only helmets, fire extinguishers, and long sleeves are), the 341 Challenge represents one of the best deals in amateur motorsports. Our recommendation: go next year, before the event is discovered and the queue at the starting line gets onerously long.
Unlike most hill-climb courses, including the most famous one, Pikes Peak, the 341 has a separate return road, the parallel highway 342, so competitors don’t have to wait until the course clears to jump back into line.
In the mandatory driver’s meetings, where attendance is taken, Rosenbaum likes to emphasize that, here in Nevada, personal responsibility is still considered up to the individual. If you crash, the state is only concerned about damage to the roadway. The organizers are billed for bent guardrails, sliced-off signposts, and gouged pavement, but if a driver dies, the police report lists the cause simply as “unfortunate incident” before it’s filed in a drawer. Life goes on.

NEWS: New ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24-Hour 2014 Qualifying mini-race
The 2014 ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24h-Race will feature a brand new “Little brother” for the 24h-Race – with a short qualifying race in April, described by Race Director Walter Hornung, as an “optimum testing opportunity in racing conditions but without championship pressure.”
The bold, new idea was unveiled today along with the news there will be several practice sessions (some in evening hours) on the original 24-hour race track, Nürburgring Nordschleife & GP Circuits.
The new format offers the media and the motor-racing enthusiasts the chance of getting a first overview of the top-class field of the 24h-Race that will be contested in June.
From the function test at the Grand Prix circuit through the practice sessions held at the Nordschleife up to the evening hours to the two-hour qualifying session and a six-hour race in the Green Hell on Sunday, the new event format provides anything helping the teams preparing for the main event held on the Corpus Christi weekend.
Naturally, the new qualifying format will make the fight for the top 30 qualifying ranking places – and the flashing strobe lights that go with that accolade – more fierce than ever.
“To make sure that the teams will be able to complete as many laps as possible even in the case of technical problems or minor accidents, we will interrupt the practice sessions by short breaks that will be used to tow damaged cars back to the paddock,” adds Hornung. “And they also can practice driving in the dark, on this weekend – a move underlining our efforts to increase the safety for the 24h-Race competitors.”

“This also might increase the motivation for teams from abroad with limited Nordschleife experience to regard the qualifying race as a must. After all, having contested the evening practice session and two stints in the six-hour qualifying race will result in the permission to contest the 24h-Race even for drivers who have got a lot of motor-racing experience under their belts – but not so when it comes to racing at the Nordschleife," a spokesman added.

NEWS: Caterham Hosting FREE Race Event @ Silverstone
How's this for generosity? Caterham will be hosting their final race event of the season at Silverstone FREE to spectators on October 19-20th.
And, as well as showcasing the famous British sportscar maker’s cool, close-faught one-make race championships, the BRSCC-run event will also offer a rare chance to see the Caterham F1 Team car in action on track in the UK – when Caterham F1 Team Reserve driver, Alexander Rossi, will complete laps of the British Grand Prix circuit in the F1 racer at lunchtime on both days.
The 19-race programme for the weekend takes in the final rounds of the Caterham Superlight R300, Supersport, Tracksport and Roadsport championships, as well as the Pistonheads.com Caterham Academy, the acclaimed grassroots series that has created hundreds of brand new racing drivers since its inception in 1995.
Caterham’s Chief Motorsport Officer, Simon Lambert, said: “Making Caterham accessible at every level is part of our key philosophy for the brand and a free race event like this will do that, plus much more besides.
“In pure racing terms, it simply doesn’t get any better than Caterham racing – it might not have the glamour of F1 but there is genuine talent in club racing and nowhere is that more apparent than in single-make racing, where skill is the defining factor rather than off-track battles of technology and strategy.
“It’s exciting, ‘seat of the pants’ stuff and I hope people who come to this race meeting get a taste of our passion for the sport . The event will also be a rare opportunity to see an F1 car in action for free.”
The on-track action starts with qualifying sessions at 9am on October 19 and 20. For more information, including a full timetable, please visit here.

We're off to the best race of the year, the epic Nurburgring 24-Hour in less than two weeks time now. NEWS: Pictures & Report of VLN Round 1
See a load of great images from our man at the Ring, Jochen of Frozenspeed of the first 2013 VLN race from last weekend – including the unveiling of Peugeot's 208 GTi T16 racer (pictured), the world premiere of the Aston Rapide S with Hydrogen technology (with AM boss, Dr Ulrich Bez at the helm), a debut for the Hyundai Veloce, not to mention our good pal, Sabine Schmitz's new Porsche 911 GT3 R getting on pole! Go Sabine!
It was a packed grid, with some 216 cars entering the race, which was won by the white Schubert (factory entry) BMW Z4 #19 won, driven by Joerg Muller, Dirk Muller and Augusto Farfus. That beast Bimmer is a total weapon.
Speaking of weapons, the 24-Hr winning yellow and green cult car that is the Manthey Racing 911 GT3 RSR also made its comeback to VLN after a year of abscence and finished in 6th place.
The top six were:
1. Schubert Z4
2. Timbuli GT3 R
3. Schubert Z4
4. Timbuli GT3 R
5. Alzen Z4
6. Manthey RSR
So, three BMW Z4s and three 911 GT3 R in the top places, proving they are the cars to beat this year, in VLN and the 24-Hour? A thrilling season awaits.
As usual, the VLN is loaded with diversity and heritage, and it was great to see the Phoenix Audi R8 with the Stuck family at the helm, with Ferdinand Stuck and Johannes Stuck (sons of the infamous Hans-Joachim Stuck) teaming up with Luca Ludwig. And also making a name for itself was Gran Turismo's Kazunori Yamauchi in the new R35 Nismo GT-R GT3; a mean looking, great sounding, quick (and thirsty) machine.
