NEWS: First European Test of 2013 Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 With JRM Group
Our pals at JRM Racing (www.jrm-group.com) have arranged a first European test of the awesome 2013 Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 – for teams and driver looking for competitive and affordable GT3 car.
JRM say: "Following a successful four day test held in Portimao this week, engineers of the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 believe the raft of 2013 performance upgrades have delivered significant improvements in both qualifying and race pace. Despite the test car not benefitting from all the planned 2013 engine upgrades, the changes to the suspension and a substantially revamped aero package enabled JRM test driver Peter Dumbreck to consistently lap substantially faster than the sister 2012 spec car running at the same time. JRM, manufacturer of the car that came close to securing the British GT crown in its debut year, was also able to capitalise on the comprehensive track time to work through its entire test programme, as well as allowing potential customers to try the car."
"The test gave us four full days running in predominantly dry conditions ,working through aero and damper set up changes to optimise the car ahead of homologation," says JRM’s Nigel Stepney. "The drivers reported turn in is significantly improved and the repositioned rear wing is more efficient than last year’s, resulting in downforce without the drag."
The potential of the car was underlined as, together with planned engine upgrades due ahead of the next test in January, the Nismo and JRM partnership will realise a further weight reduction of 20kg. "For instance, we have taken the opportunity to upgrade the heavier production headlamps for carbon fibre units," adds Stepney. "Shedding some weight will enable us to optimise balance ahead of final homologation."
In addition to Dumbreck, drivers from the UK, Europe and the Middle East that are considering the Nissan sampled the 2013 spec car. Competitive pricing, some £50,000 lower than similarly specified cars, led to ten drivers making the trip, including British GT4 champion Jody Fannin. "The 2013 car immediately instilled confidence and I was able to set competitive lap times on an unfamiliar circuit after a handful of laps,” says Fannin “I found it well balanced and very stable. It was particularly strong under braking and on turn in. I'm sure it'll be a competitive proposition in 2013."
JRM is already planning a further test in January 2013 ahead of the Balance of Performance trials when potential customers can also drive the car. Bionic GT3 car anyone? Contact JRM Racing for full details via the website.

NEWS: Nissan Juke-R Goes All Batman! Win it!
Last week we got the Usain Bolt gold Nissan GT-R auction and this week Nissan's marketing team are teaming up with the Batman movie franchisers – creating a one-off Batman-inspired Juke Nismo! It's been built to celebrate launch of The Dark Knight Rises™ on Blu-Ray™ & DVD (December 3rd) and is based on the new Juke Nismo, featuring matt black paint and lots of Batman detailing. And it's not up for sale, but available to win here: www.builttothrill.co.uk
The Juke's official title is: The Dark Knight Rises™ Juke Nismo – and the the one-off machine features a host of Batman-inspired details "that will make the lucky owner the envy of every movie fan and car buff," say Nissan. It features the same 200PS 1.6-litre turbocharged engine driving the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox - giving it a 0-62mph time of 7.8 seconds - as well as a Nismo bodykit, uprated suspension and enhanced interior. And there's a load of Batman-inspired interior and exterior details "that will make the driver feel just like Bruce Wayne." These include: Matt black paint, 18-inch rims, a shark fin antenna replacing the standard car’s conventional aerial, aluminium bat badges on the front grille and tailgate, bat logos on the kickplates and reflective bat badges on the headrests of the suede-trimmed Nismo sports seats. Best – or geekiest – of all, thanks to downlighters mounted under the door mirrors the famous Bat signal can be projected onto the floor area around the doors. A clever uplighter projects the same signal onto the black headlining inside too.
See some more images on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/roadmagblog The Dark Knight Rises™ Juke Nismo is the work of Nissan’s very own Batcave – Nissan Design Europe, based in London’s Paddington, the same studio responsible for the design of the original Juke.
Nissan say: "The Dark Knight Rises™ Juke Nismo will not go on sale in a Nissan dealership, nor will it be made available to the highest bidder – instead the only way to get this car on your driveway is to enter a special competition at www.builttothrill.co.uk. Just take the Thrill Test and you’re in with a chance of owning The Dark Knight Rises™ Juke Nismo. The competition runs until February 28th 2013 with the winner announced early March."
Meanwhile, order books for the Juke Nismo open in January 2013 with deliveries set for March 2013. The first in a range of Nismo road cars, it has been designed and developed by Nissan’s Nismo performance division. It will be available with two transmissions: a 2WD manual or 4WD CVT automatic. Prices and full specifications for the Juke Nismo will be released closer to the car’s launch.

NEWS: New 4th Gen Subaru Forester Unveiled: With 280PS Hot Petrol Version
Subaru's already excellent all-rounder, the fabulous Forester (read all about it here: http://issuu.com/roadonlinemagazine/docs/road_23_subaruspecial), is all set for a brand new, forth generation vehicle – including a new 280PS petrol Boxer version. Yay! The performance Forester is back, as we hoped it would be.
The great-looking new car will be on sale in the UK from summer 2013, with three 2.0-litre Boxer engines available, improved performance and fuel economy over the outgoing model and being "larger, more refined and more efficient," according to Subaru sources.
They add: "The new Forester builds upon the outgoing model’s credentials as a go-anywhere, user-friendly SUV, with improved performance, safety and efficiency and a larger, more practical cabin. Subaru’s unique Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system remains at the heart of the vehicle, while a low centre of gravity and improved body rigidity contribute to improved refinement and a typically engaging drive on the road."
Confirming the UK launch of the Forester, Subaru has also announced outline details of the engine line-up, which will include 150PS 2.0-litre Boxer diesel and petrol units, as well as – best of all – a return of the potent Forester, with a new 2.0-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine, producing 280PS. Yes!
Both of the naturally-aspirated engines will feature a six-speed manual transmission as standard, while Subaru’s Lineartronic (CVT) transmission is available on both petrol engines. The Lineartronic transmission has been modified to manage the increased power while also providing improved fuel efficiency, and ensures that both CVT-equipped petrol engines achieve the 2015 Japanese fuel economy standard.
Haydn Davies, Marketing Director, Subaru UK, commented: "Since the Forester’s launch in 1997, it has gained a loyal following across the UK for its rugged, go anywhere abilities and these developments will ensure it remains a firm SUV favourite. The fourth-generation Forester will feature the latest All-Wheel Drive system and Boxer engines, while a lot of work has gone into improving refinement, ride quality and safety."
Further details of the new Subaru Forester will be announced in the new year and we can not wait. BIG Forester fans here at Road.

NEWS: Toyota AE86 Class Victory on RAC Rally
Toyota GB supported classic rally team Midgley Motorsport is celebrating a remarkable debut class victory on the Roger Albert Clark Rally, the UK’s toughest historic motorsport event – with 160 miles and 24 special stages (including Dalby, Duncombe Park, Croft, Craik, Gen Dhu and Kershore), plus 378 road miles.
The team’s 25-year-old Corolla AE86, crewed by Will Midgley and Jonathan Driver (great name!), beat its closest rival to the Kielder Forest finish line last night (Sunday) by 14 minutes.
Midgley and Driver battled throughout the three-day event against another Corolla, crewed by Andy Madge and Pat Cooper. The duel for class honours came down to the final sting-in-the-tail stage in the 160-mile rally, the 17-mile Kershope test – a rallying classic.
"Going into Kershope we were three minutes behind Andy," said Will, 37 and from Grassington in North Yorkshire. "He looked like he had it in the bag because he had been going really well. But he came off three miles into the stage and couldn’t get going again. It was really unfortunate for Andy, but good luck for us."
The Midgley Corolla, which is liveried identically to those which Will’s father, John Midgley, and Per Eklund drove to a string of UK rallying successes for Team Toyota GB in the mid-’80s, was one of four finishers in its class.
It wasn’t all plain sailing for Will and Jonathan: "We hit a huge pot-hole on the first evening and that put the steering well off track – one wheel was pointing one way and one the other – but we were able to get that remedied in service. We were still working on the car, in mud and slurry, until one-thirty the next morning. We had four hours of sleep and then we were back off again."
On Saturday, at the Croft circuit spectator stage, the Midgley Toyota lapsed on to three cylinders and that cost the crew a couple of minutes on their second run around the track. "After that, everything was fairly trouble-free; we kept it on the road and the Toyota ran really well. Jonathan and I learned a lot: it was the first time for both of us navigating with maps, our first time rallying in the dark, and the first time in fog. That was a lot of firsts for one event. The team worked really hard to keep us going, especially on the Friday night, and we thoroughly enjoyed the event.
"I am sure we will be back to do the rally again next year and hopefully also we will contest the new RAC Club championship that is being launched for cars of the era of our Corolla."

NEWS: Mazda MX-5 Upgraded Line-up
The world's best selling sportscar – Mazda's MX-5 – has revised its line-up by introducing upgraded models with a fresh face, new pedestrian-friendly bonnet, satellite navigation system, side airbags, climate control air-conditioning and an even more rewarding driving experience.
The new seven-strong range of upgraded Mazda MX-5 sportscars, which introduces the 2.0-litre MX-5 Sport Tech Nav models, with integrated satellite navigation as standard – a Mazda first on the MX-5 range – is on sale from 1 December priced from £18,495 to £23,595 on-the road (OTR). For six years in a row the Mazda MX-5 has been voted ‘Best Roadster’ by Auto Express magazine.
"When developing the upgraded Mazda MX-5, Mazda’s designers were determined to make the revised roadster even better looking and even more fun to drive. An aggressive new front grille and new bumper design with a bold chin spoiler creates a deeper and wider look that also improves aerodynamics by reducing drag around the fog lamp and over the front tyres," comments Peter Allibon, Sales Director, Mazda UK.
As well as giving upgraded Mazda MX-5 a fresh appearance, the new front-end design simultaneously improves pedestrian safety. Keeping ahead of tougher EU regulations, the MX-5 is the first Mazda to be equipped with the company’s newly-developed active bonnet system. If a collision with a pedestrian is detected, the trailing edge of the bonnet instantly ‘pops-up’ to increase the crumple zone between the bonnet and engine, reducing the severity of pedestrian injuries.
Every upgraded Mazda MX-5 continues to offer the Japanese marque’s unique ‘Jinba Ittai’ handling finesse with a rear-wheel drive chassis that delivers perfectly balanced handling and pure driving exhilaration. Now, the six manual transmission models feature a modified throttle to improve responsiveness and give more linear, nimble acceleration, especially when manoeuvring out of corners. At the same time, Mazda engineers optimised the vacuum brake booster to improve brake return control and thus front-rear load distribution, particularly when braking into bends.
"The Mazda MX-5 enjoys incredible popularity in Britain and now the ‘Upgraded’ range offers an even more rewarding sportscar ownership experience, while remaining unrivalled as an exhilarating drive that can also be used everyday. Together with its affordability, low running costs, enviable reliability, as confirmed by the 2012 What Car? magazine annual reliability survey, great residual values and our current low-rate finance offers, the Mazda MX-5 is a thoroughly modern sportscar that people can buy with their heart and their head," adds Allibon.
The upgraded Mazda MX-5 benefits from enhanced equipment with climate control air-conditioning and glossy dark grey dashboard panel and steering wheel inserts on every model. Upgraded Mazda MX-5 Sport Tech and PowerShift models also gain an auto-dimming interior mirror, while Sport Tech models also boast an alloy pedal set.
New to the Mazda MX-5 line-up, the Sport Tech Nav model features a TomTom satellite-navigation system with a fully integrated 5.8-inch touch screen monitor, 4GB SD card based map (45 countries), Live Services, iPod and Bluetooth® connectivity, and complete multi-media functionality.
The upgraded Mazda MX-5 range also benefits from a refreshed palette of colours and new to the Mazda MX-5 range, Sparkling Black Mica, Dolphin Grey Mica and Crystal White Pearlescent. Also available is the popular True Red Solid, Aluminium Silver Metallic, Copper Red Mica and Stormy Blue Mica.
Mazda MX-5 customers have a choice of three powertrains, all fine-tuned to maximise thrills and minimise fuel consumption – the 126ps 1.8i MZR with a five-speed gearbox, and the 160ps 2.0i MZR with a smooth-shifting six-speed manual transmission or ‘PowerShift‘ six-speed sequential paddle-shift transmission that allows manual control or a fully automatic mode.

NEWS: Opel Motorsport Back in Rallying & VLN @ Nurburgring
Great news! Opel Motorsport is back in rallying, with the all-new, internationally-focused Opel ADAM Cup. And there will also be a circuit program focused on Germany, the VLN Championship and the Nurburgring-24-Hour with the new Astra OPC Cup! Hooray!
"These new motorsports activities play an important role in the strategic re-alignment of the company; they are a fundamental element of our brand profile," says Dr. Thomas Sedran, Opel’s Deputy CEO.
Opel motorsport history:
The most successful era of the company’s rally history began in the mid-seventies. It was quite literally “driven” by the German driver, Walter Rohrl, one of the all-time top rally pilots. During his time with Opel, he and his Ascona A won the European championship title in 1974 and again in with the Ascona B in 1979. The crowning glory of the Regensburg man’s era was his world championship title in 1982. He achieved this with his legendary Ascona 400. Opel is just as at home on the racing circuit. In grass root touring cars competitions, the brand with the famous lightning logo achieved countless successes on its home turf, the northern loop of the Nurburgring race track. From 1993 onwards Manuel Reuter became a favorite with the fan community thanks to his Calibra V6 that competed professionally. He first drove it in the DTM competition and eventually won a title in the subsequent ITC series. Further highlights included the car makers’ championship of the DTM/ITC in 1998 in the STW series with the help of his Vectra. Overall victory in the 24-hour Nurburgring race 2003 was achieved with an Astra V8 coupe.
Opel has a long tradition and heritage in motorsports and is aiming "to create a new competition that appeals to customers which is both technically sophisticated and reasonably priced, while at the same time providing a platform for young ambitious drivers to continuously develop their talent."
A rally cup version of the new Opel ADAM, which has been closely specified to FIA R2 standards, will be used in the 2013 season. As part of the "ADAC Rally Masters” race series these customer cars will compete in a branded cup ("ADAC Opel Rally Cup"). The allure of the competition is also increased by the fact that the most successful drivers can expect to win cash prizes. In addition, there is a special "junior rally" points system for drivers younger than 27 years. The overall winner of a set of final trials will get special coaching in the next season.
And on the track, the new Astra OPC is being made available from the 2013 season onwards as a racing version for customer sports. The Cup cars are engineered to match the "VLN Endurance Championship" standards which are the most popular grass roots racing series in Europe. The cars will also compete in a brand trophy in their own class ("Astra OPC Cup"). The highlight of the season is expected to be a 24-hour race on the Nurburgring race track.

Opel say: "An especially attractive benefits package is being offered for private competitors, which is not limited to top performance and affordable cutting edge racing technology. In addition to the rally project, there is a pot of money with attractive cash prizes. Additionally, customers benefit from competitively priced spare parts as well as technical and organisational support on and off the race track."
We are chuffed to see the brilliant brand back on the stages and out on the Green Hell too, and can not wait to get out in the forests and trackside to see the Opel brand back in motorsport.

NEWS: New TomTom Via 130 & 135 With "Speak & Go"
TomTom has released a brand new SatNav device – the TomTom Via 130 (4.3-inch screen) and TomTom Via 135 (5-inch screen) – featuring a new "Speak & Go" function, aiming to make the use of the SatNav safer, as drivers can control the device with just the sound of their voice, as well as making hands-free calls, helping them keep their hands on the wheel and focus on the road.
We've just been sent one on test and it's absolutely fabulous – with great design and build quality, intuitive SatNav menus and idiot-proof, crystal clear colour displays. And the new "Speak & Go" software works a treat. TomTom say: "Speak & Go recognises over 1,000 spoken commands and their synonyms, so drivers can speak naturally to interact with their device and this is a vastly improved version of TomTom’s existing voice command and control function." We concur.
And it's still great value too – with the TomTom Via 130 available at £129 for the UK/Republic of Ireland map and £149 for European maps and the larger screen Via 135 priced at £149 for the UK/Republic of Ireland map. Plus, the new SatNavs also include hands-free calling via Bluetooth® enabling drivers to make and answer calls safely in the car. And the Via 130 & 135 come with a USB cable, with cigar lighter adaptor and adjustable screen suction clamp. "The new Speak & Go feature helps increase focus and concentration by allowing users to keep their hands on the wheel," says Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director of TomTom. "Just say an address, a Point of Interest or simply ‘take me home,’ and TomTom plans your route straight away. Interacting with your navigation device has never been easier; it slots perfectly into your everyday drive."
The Via 130 is also pioneering TomTom’s lifetime free daily map changes. Updates are based on reports from TomTom’s Map Share community of 21 million, and help drivers to deal with frequent road changes such as new speed limits and blocked roads. A Map Share service has previously been available to certain customers using maps which are less than 12 months old, but it will now be offered to cover the lifetime of a device.
Other features of the TomTom Via 130 and 135 include:
· Hands-free calling via Bluetooth
· Advanced lane guidance, giving drivers extra clarity when navigating difficult junctions.
· Improved IQ Routes, which uses real travel information shared by millions of drivers to get the best routes and arrival times at every time of day.
· TomTom Map Share, which provides drivers with free daily map changes for life from the TomTom Map Share Community.
· Integrated mounting; a convenient foldaway mount that is integrated with the device, so it is always there when needed.
For the world’s most up-to-date route planner, including live traffic information go to www.tomtom.com/livetraffic
For further information, please visit www.tomtom.com
We can't recommend this superb system highly enough. The best on the market we have tested at this price. Buy one for Christmas for someone you love – or indeed as a treat to yourself – and be very happy! It's way better than a lot of integrated car systems we have tested of late, and a whole lot more affordable too. You can even use them walking about a city you don't know. Cool product.
NEWS: Petter Solberg 2013 Plans
We've just heard what Petter Solberg has to say about his plans for 2013... which may involve him being behind the wheel of a race car! Like to see that! He said: "There seems to be a lot of talk about me retiring via pieces of quotes being compressed in to numerous articles around the web. I wish things moved more quickly, but they do not. Of course my full interest is to be in the WRC and the works seat at M-Sport, but these things take time. We're attempting to figure things out from both sides. IF for some reason nothing happens with this, then I do have other plans, and those plans will have me competing behind the wheel of a race car. Thank you for your concern, and I will keep you updated. I will never stop competing within Motorsports. That's a combination of my passion, and your support!" Good luck for the year, whatever you end up doing Petter. We love ya man! You're a modern legend of rallying. NEWS: Skyfall Bond Aston Martin DB5 Details Revealed
The iconic silver Aston Martin DB5 which features in Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond film, was prepared at Aston Martin Works, renowned worldwide as the official heritage and service division of the marque, it was revealed today.
The brief was to ‘clone’ the DB5 owned by the makers of the Bond movies, EON Productions, to provide a second car for filming. The project started with sourcing an appropriate car, facilitated by Aston Martin Works. Once the car was sourced, it was prepared by the Aston Martin Works heritage team, who perform restoration miracles on all Aston Martins from the DB2 onwards. In just a matter of weeks the DB5 was transformed from green with beige interior to the stunning Silver Birch paintwork with black trim, which was ‘distressed’ so as not to appear brand new. The final touch to the paintwork was to add a keyline on the roof to represent the exit hatch for the ejector seat. In addition to the aesthetic works, the car also required a complete mechanical overhaul in preparation for filming.
Aston Martin said: "We have a long association with James Bond – Skyfall is the fifth Bond movie in which the DB5 has made an appearance. Other models have also played a part over the years, from the DBS in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the V8 Vantage Volante in The Living Daylights, the Vanquish in Die Another Day and the DBS in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. And of course, many of them have featured exciting gadgets from the ejector seat in the DB5 to the spike-producing tyres and a self-destruct function found on the V8 Vantage Volante. It is therefore fitting that the DB5 was prepared for its recent role, by Aston Martin Works, the spiritual home of the marque at Newport Pagnell. Aston Martin Works continues to meet the needs of owners of every model with expertise spanning from the DB2 to the One-77 supercar."
Kingsley Riding-Felce, Managing Director of Aston Martin Works commented: "We are very pleased that the role of the DB5 in Skyfall maintains the long association between James Bond and Aston Martin – and that the expertise of our heritage team is showcased by this iconic car. It is apt that it was prepared by Aston Martin Works at Newport Pagnell, the home of Aston Martin for over 50 years."

NEWS: New TomTom Speed Camera App Update
TomTom has today released an update to its Speed Cameras app for iPhone – giving drivers a free 12-month subscription to the Speed Camera service. The FREE to download app also includes new features: Drivers will now receive audible and visual speed camera alerts when the app is running in the background or the screen is off and average speed check support has improved, helping drivers to stay below the limit, even when exiting a tunnel.
TomTom say: "The Speed Cameras app for iPhone warns drivers of upcoming fixed and mobile cameras, helping them to stay safe and avoid fines. It informs drivers of their speed, the speed limit, the type of camera ahead and the remaining distance to reach it. With the latest version of the app, both new and existing customers will receive 12 months of the Speed Cameras service for free. Existing customers will get an extra, free year of the service when their active subscription expires."
"Our Speed Cameras service is already powered by a 1.6 million strong community of drivers. That’s everyone using the service on their navigation device, in-dash navigation system or smartphone. As more and more drivers share newly added or removed cameras with each other, the service will get even better and benefit from the power of the growing community," says Gerry Hinds, Vice-President Mobile at TomTom.
The latest version of the app also gives drivers the option to receive warnings for mobile camera hotspots. The update also allows drivers to stream audio alerts to the TomTom Hands-free car kit, or other A2DP Bluetooth compatible devices, to amplify the sound.
For new customers, the app is available for free in the Apple app store. And find out more at the tomtom.com website.
VIDEO: 2013 Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 Model Unveiled & Uk Test Dates
Great news! Nismo has released the 2013 GT-R GT3 and here's a video of it in testing, looking menacing. Like it's faster, harder, stronger road going GT-R cousin, the FIA GT3-spec car is much improved, focusing on: Better engine performance & durability, greater aerodynamic performance, improved brake balance, new suspension settings to suit the new aerodynamics package and new gear ratios to optimize engine output increase.
The car's VR38DETT V6 Twin Turbocharged motor unleashes a maximum 405kw (550ps) horsepower and maximum torque of 637Nm. Standard equipment includes a six speed sequential manual gearbox, semi-automatic paddle shift and adjustable steering wheel. As mandated by FIA GT3 rules, the car is rear-wheel-drive. The engine sees the biggest contribution to performance enhancement, which includes new camshaft timing, as well as greater reinforcement for added durability. And several modifications were made to enhance aerodynamics: canards were added to the front and the front fender louvers were enlarged, plus the positioning of the rear wing was optimized. These changes improved aerodynamic balance between front and rear, and increased downforce, which enhanced overall aerodynamic performance.
The 2012 out-going model, which debuted this March, has won all over the world entered by Nismo (NDDP Racing) as well as various customer racing teams, racing in this year's SUPER GT series (GT 300 class), Super Taikyu (GT3 class), British GT Championship and GT Cup. Nismo say: "We have developed the 2013 Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 using all the valuable data brought back from these races, in addition to the dyno, track tests, and customer feedback, to enhance its competitiveness and performance."
The 2013 model, Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 is manufactured on demand, at a cost here in the UK (Europe & Russia) of £270,000. Orders will be accepted from November 13, 2012 on. Should the number of orders exceed production capacity, Nismo retains the right to make final decisions on order fulfillment. Additionally, Nismo is currently preparing an update kit for the 2012 model, Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3.
Sales and customer support for the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 will be implemented by Nismo for Japan, Asia, North America, South America, and Oceania, whilst Nismo project partner, JRM Racing (www.jrm-group.com), will continue to cover Europe, Russia and the Middle East, in the same way as 2012 Model. For more details, please see to http://www.nismo.co.jp/en/products/GT3/index.html or visit the JRM website.

NEWS: Prodrive Winter Driving Course
Rally and race Gods, Prodrive are running a great value Winter driving course – aimed at teaching you how to control your car on snow and ice and give you more confidence this Winter.
The course takes place at their own private proving ground in Warwickshire (where legendary Prodrive rally, race & road cars cars are tested), which has specially designed low friction surfaces to simulate driving on snow or ice. Prodrive say: "Many courses use a skid car, which simply raises or lowers a car on casters. Using low friction surfaces not only replicates snow and ice more accurately, but allows you to use your own car for the course. This means that you can learn how your car responds in these conditions – after all this is what you will be driving this Winter."The course includes:
1. Briefing: including a theoretical overview of driving in snow (15min)
2. Demonstrations: our instructors will demonstrate what happens on our skid pans. (15min)
3. In-car tuition: (90 mins session)
They add: "You get behind the wheel to get a feel for driving on snow and ice and receive expert tuition in firstly, how to avoid getting into the situation where you lose control and then how to regain control should you need to. There are 2/3 people per instructor and you will get a total of 30 minutes at the wheel during the session, split into two 15 minute periods. For the remaining time you may ride in the cars to continue your learning."
The day ends with a de-brief; to review what you have learnt in theory and practice and how to prepare your car for Winter, including using Winter tyres (20min).
By the end of the Prodrive session you should have a clear understanding of what to do should you ever find yourself in driving in snow and ice this Winter.
The course can be undertaken in either your own car or a Prodrive car (sadly, not the Group N STi Impreza you see pictured, as tested by us here: http://issuu.com/roadonlinemagazine/docs/road_3).
Prodrive say: "We recommend using your own car as your experience will be more faithful to that you may experience on the road. Due to the speeds and nature of the driving, there should be little, if any, wear and tear on the vehicle."
Prices are £125 per person in own vehicle or £150 per person in a Prodrive vehicle (all prices are inclusive of VAT).
To book a Winter driving course session, phone the Prodrive Performance Centre on 01676 536006, or click here to send an email.

NEWS: Jessica Ennis Unveils Jaguar F-Type's Dynamic Debut
The all-new F-TYPE, driven by Jaguar Academy of Sports Ambassador Jessica Ennis, made its UK dynamic debut – purring like a good 'un (the Jag, not Jess!) – in front of a crowd of over 500,000 people at this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show in London. With a stunning display of old and new, the F-TYPE made its way through the City of London accompanied by two E-Types and got a great reception as it passed by the grandstands.
Jessica Ennis commented: "It was great being part of the Lord Mayor’s Show in the Jaguar F-TYPE. I was amazed how many people turned out to watch the procession.”
Bringing up the rear were two of the most famous E-Types ever built, Chassis No. 4 and No. 24, which were restored by Classic Motor Cars of Bridgnorth and showed the strong historic links existing between the two models. Pageantmaster Dominic Reid OBE said: "It was a great honour for us to welcome such an outstanding Olympian as Jessica Ennis to the Lord Mayor’s Show. It was wonderful how the crowd reacted to her. It was great to see Jaguar Cars back in the parade and the new F-TYPE making its UK debut supported by two important E-Types. This was particularly poignant as my father’s E-Type was driven in the show in 1973 by Graham Hill."
This year's event saw more than 6,500 people, 21 carriages, a Sherman tank and a steamroller taking part, which filled the whole area between Mansion House and the Royal Courts of Justice in Aldwych. The procession was cheered by thousands of people and watched live on the BBC by millions more who saw Jessica Ennis drive the all-new F-TYPE.
Hard to say which looked better... you decide!

VIDEO: Eterniti launches the 180mph, £210,000 Artemis Super-SUV
And here's a video of the incredible Artemis Super-SUV launched tonight...
NEWS: 600bhp, 180mph, £210K 'Super-SUV' Artemis Launch by Eterniti Motors
Christ! Every now and again something a bit special pops up and blows us away – and the 600bhp, 553lb ft, 180mph, 4.8-litre twin turbo V8 Artemis 'Super-SUV' built by London’s only carmaker,
Eterniti Motors, has just knocked us sideways. The incredible, £210,000 monster was unveiled to us tonight in London at the 10,000 sq.ft. Eterniti showrooms in Park Royal, north-west London, in a full-on production-specification version of the company's first model. The Artemis had previously been shown as an engineering prototype at Beijing’s Auto China 2012 international motor show in April. Now it's here and folk are in awe of it, understandably.
Tonight's event was attended by over 100 media, business figures and VIPs including Grammy and Brit award-winning music producer Steve Levine, who has worked with artists from the Beach Boys to Gary Moore. The guests witnessed the unveiling of the car which features a previously unseen mega-luxury interior, in an ultra-modern showroom environment. The incredible Eterniti facility includes an atelier and design studio where customers can have consultations to develop their own vehicle specifications. In addition there is a sister build facility close by, making Eterniti London’s only carmaker.
The Artemis is the world’s first Super-SUV – a term created by Eterniti for a new class of vehicle providing the higher levels of luxury, performance and exclusivity demanded by today’s wealthy car buyers. It comes to the market ahead of projected luxury SUVs from Bentley, Lamborghini and Maserati.
The car has a limousine-like rear cabin featuring standard-setting legroom, twin reclining rear seats with heating and cooling, iPad-ready holders with electronic reveal, and a drinks chiller with crystal glasses. This satisfies a specific and growing demand, particularly in Asian markets, for a car suitable for chauffeured transport and also for driving for pleasure. Unlike a conventional limousine, an SUV can offer excellent handling and driver appeal, and the ride height and ruggedness are suitable for poor road surfaces which can make limousines and conventional high-performance cars completely impractical. With all these attributes in one package, the Artemis is the ultimate crossover.
The interior is lavishly handcrafted in Britain, with a specification also including the finest leathers, quilted floor coverings and boot trim, lambswool rugs, veneers including natural woods, piano black and carbon fibre, and the no-cost option of starlight roof lining. Thousands of combinations of exterior and interior trims mean that every car can be made unique.
The body panels are carbon composite and also hand-built, and finished in a large choice of paint colours, complemented by different chrome trim styles. Ultra-low profile 315/25 tyres sit on dedicated 23” super-lightweight forged alloy rims in a variety of styles.
The 4.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine produces at least 600bhp (441kW) and 750Nm (553 lb ft) torque, can accelerate from 0-100kph in 4.5 secs and can exceed 290kph, making it the fastest large SUV available. Performance and handling have been developed by a race-bred British engineering team led by Alastair Macqueen. Macqueen previously developed to production the Jaguar XJ220, then the world’s fastest road car, and has engineered three outright Le Mans 24 Hour race wins for Jaguar and Bentley. The car has been test-driven by F1 Grand Prix winner Johnny Herbert.
"With its 600 bhp, active anti-roll system, massive grip and controlled dynamics, I believe that this is an SUV with the heart and soul of a supercar," says Head of Engineering Alastair Macqueen. "And with more space and luxury we think that makes it a true Super-SUV."
Interior trim and personalisation is headed by Alan Mobberley, who was previously at Land Rover for 20 years, with responsibility for development of Land Rover interior design including the iconic Range Rover and the Discovery, for which he won a Design Council Award.
The Eterniti Artemis is priced at the local currency equivalent of £210,000 plus local taxes in all markets except China, which has a unique pricing strategy. A fully bespoke service is also offered for customers wanting complete personalisation, for which cars are priced on an individual basis.
Eterniti is establishing a network of wholly-owned showrooms in key centres. London, where the cars are hand-built, is the headquarters. Eterniti-owned showrooms will open in Asia in 2013, beginning with Hong Kong, which will serve as the company’s Asia-Pacific hub. The company is actively looking for retail partners to develop representation in China during 2013. Cars will be covered by a full two-year, 100,000-mile warranty including servicing, and UK customers will have access to finance and insurance.
Speaking about Eterniti, a spokesman said: "Eterniti was started in 2010 to help satisfy a growing demand for additional luxury and personalised specifications among car buyers, particularly in major cities, global wealth centres and emerging markets ranging from London to the Asia-Pacific region. Uniquely, it is located in London and builds its vehicles there.

It has further experience in motor sport, with an FIA championship-winning record in GT series in both Europe and Asia, and Chief Engineer Alastair Macqueen has masterminded three wins in the Le Mans 24 Hour classic, for Jaguar and Bentley."
Expect to hear a LOT more from the Eterniti brand and much ooo-ing and arr-ing by the press on the bionic, ballistic Artemis 'Super-SUV' in the days, weeks, months and years to come. A new era of London car making is upon us... and we applaud Eterniti whole-heartedly.

NEWS: New SKODA Rapid Launched
We've just returned from the UK launch of Skoda's 7th member of its range – the Rapid. It's a 'price sensitive' A-sector, family car which sits between the current Octavia (due to get a re-launch and go more upmarket & techy early in 2013) and the Fabia. It starts at £12,900 for the 1.2 75PS S model, rising to £17,890 for the 1.6 TDi CR 105PS DPF model. There are three specs – S, SE & Elegance. And there are five engines – four petrol (1.2 75PS, 1.2 TSi 86PS, 1.2 TSi 105PS & 1.4 TSi 122PS) and one 1.6 TDi CR 105PS diesel, with either five or six-speed manuals, or seven-speed DSG on the 1.4 TSi 122PS petrol range-topper. Greenline variants will be released in 2013, but, sadly, there will be no vRS version for fast families. That's a real shame, because the chassis is superb.
This is the first Skoda to feature the "new Skoda DNA" design which, according to the designer they brought in from the factory is "elegant, timeless and has sheer, precise lines and plays with light and shadow." It also proudly wears the new Skoda badge, up high on its fresh front end, featuring the 'power dome' V-lines. And at the rear, there's C-shape LED lights and a striking triangular recess for the number plate – all part of the new Skoda look, to be rolled out in forthcoming models.
Inside, there's the usual Skoda/VAG quality, simplicity, headroom and legroom and also a 'best in class' 550-litre storage space with the seats up – as demonstrated by packing an unreal amount of luggage in the boot on the launch – & 1490-litre seats down – enough to rival some estates! It's also loaded with Skoda's "simply clever" design touches, like a groovy green ice scraper fitted in the fuel filler cap for those icy mornings, a reverse-able boot floor with carpet on one side and rubber on the other for messy boot loads, A-pillar ticket holder, boot hooks etc. As they say, it's functional, clever, smart, spacious, accessible and authentic. And it drives really nicely too, especially the petrol models. Ford's Focus, Peugeot's 308, Vauxhall's Astra and Renault's Megane better watch out... Rapid is in showrooms later this week. NEWS: Winter Is Coming! Make Sure Your Car Isn’t Caught Out!
With America’s east coast being thoroughly battered by the recent super-storm, British complaints about the weather seem a little inappropriate. Still, a blast of arctic air has ensured things feel a little cold around these parts (a second pair of pants only go so far) and the snow that fell offered a timely reminder to motorists that winter may as well be here.
The distinguishing feature of a British winter is that you don’t know when it’s going to start, or what it’s going to do. In this guide from Nationwide Vehicle Contracts we see how being prepared for winter may spare you from unpleasant journeys and genuine danger.
Combating the cold
- Cold weather creates treacherous road conditions, but low temperatures are a threat to the normal operation of the car itself.
- Wake earlier and run your air conditioner to de-mist your windscreen. You can speed the process up a little by adding de-icer to your windscreen washer fluid and running your wipers.
- Your radiator and engine block can freeze, and possibly even crack. Make sure you have a solution of 50% antifreeze and 50% water in your cooling system when winter comes along.
- Ensure you use the correct anti-freeze in your car: Your owner’s manual should make a recommendation, but most modern cars use long-life antifreezes. Avoid mixing types of anti-freeze.
- If your engine makes any unusual sounds or your car begins to overheat, frozen water may be causing a blockage. Immediately stop somewhere safe, turn off the engine and investigate.
- Keep de-icer in the car, but also have a backup supply outside it in case the locks freeze.
Though local councils appear to be getting better at gritting roads and clearing snow, you are still going to encounter problems when out and about in winter. A lack of grip and poor visibility will blight your drive, and it’s important that you prepare your car and yourself for driving in these conditions:
- Winter conditions make checking tyre tread depth and factory mandated inflation absolutely critical.
- Change your fuel habits: top up more regularly.
- Bring a second pair of shoes for driving (snow covered shoes obviously offer poor grip).
- Avoid back-road routes and hills, if you can. Plan you route before you set out.
- Accelerate gently, turn slowly, brake carefully and early. Drive with more distance between you and other cars.
- Bear in mind that snow-chains are only useful in deep snow, and will need to be taken off on concrete.
Even if you keep your car in tip-top condition, it only takes a sudden snowfall on an inadequately gritted road for you to be well and truly stuck. Before you set off, it’s a good idea to travel with the following in the boot, so you can react to any problem or simply sit it out without risking exposure to the elements:
- Jump leads.
- Small shovel.
- Small knife.
- Blanket.
- First-aid kit.
- Flashlight with spare batteries.
- Energy / Granola bars.
- Large bottle of water.
- Bag of sand or cat litter (to create traction).
- A spare phone.
- Map.
- Something to read!
Safe Winter driving folks!

PROMO: Onlinecarparts Maintenance Top £ Saving Tips
Our pals at the very handy www.OnlineCarparts.co.uk offer up some obvious, but useful top money saving tips for running your motor:
They say: "In today’s world, it seems like having a car is not a sign of luxury any more. Nevertheless, the maintenance of your vehicle could cost you a bundle. That’s why many car owners are looking for the new ways to save money on car repairs and expenses. Naturally, the more cost-saving measures you adopt, the more money you’ll save. However, when you purchase a repair, you have to think about its quality not just its value. Visit here to find out how we can help you keep your motoring costs down. And follow these simple top tips:
1. Do not fill your vehicle up with petrol, diesel, LPG (etc.) if the fuel cost is at least 10 pence more expensive than average. It really adds up. Shop around.2. Use air conditioning and heating systems only when you are sure you really need them, as they consume an incredible amount of fuel that will lead to unjustified financial losses.
3. Do your best to keep the air con off when you are at lower speeds (under 50mph). And we strongly recommend you should close windows at higher speeds and use your air conditioning or the heating system only if you need them.
4. Buy car repairs that are cheap but of the best possible quality. Buying repairs via the internet has become one of the most popular ways of reducing your expenses on car maintenance. Using Online Car Parts you save a lot of money and time enjoying all the benefits – find the repairs you are looking for, compare the prices, do shopping 24 hours a day and 365 day per year. Normally the prices of the online shops are lower compared to a normal autoshop, as the online shop don't have to pay for the expensive overheads, like renting, additional taxes, wages, staff training, etc. At the same time you can find the great car repair brands like Bosch, Beru, Sachs, Luk, Hella, Valeo, Febi, Bilstein, TRW, Ate, K&N, Metzger and so on."

NEWS: ŠKODA UK Motorsport & Andreas Mikkelsen Win Successive IRC
Huge congratulations to both ŠKODA UK Motorsport and Andreas Mikkelsen – who became the first ever driver to successfully defend their Intercontinental Rally Challenge title, after finishing 2nd on the final round, the Cyprus Rally, in his Fabia S2000, and dominating the season, in style. Partnered by Ola Fløene, who retains the co-drivers’ title, Andreas has 'only' won two rounds of this year’s IRC, but in Richard Burns/Carlos Sainz consistency style finished 2nd five times and recorded a huge 58 stage wins (making a total of 99 stage wins in 2011 and 2012 IRC seasons).
ŠKODA utterly dominated this year’s IRC, scoring 120 stage wins out of a possible 172 on its way to be crowned IRC Manufacturers’ champions for the third consecutive year. Four different ŠKODA drivers – Mikkelsen, Juho Hänninen, Jan Kopecký and Dimitar Iliev – won IRC events in 2012, ŠKODA drivers filled the final top four positions on the drivers’ standings and the Fabia Super 2000 won eight out of the 13 rounds.
Andreas took an early lead in Cyprus with fastest time on the opening Pafos city centre stage on Friday night, before losing two minutes and dropping to 7th after picking up a right rear puncture on Saturday’s opening stage. He launched an amazing comeback on the mixed surface stages in the rugged Troodos Mountains, setting seven fastest stage times over the next eight stages to close to within just 49 seconds of leader Nasser Al-Attiyah after SS10. Another puncture on SS11 saw Andreas settle for 2nd place in Cyprus and the IRC title – and in tribute to the contribution his co-driver has made during his double title success, and indeed since the start of Andreas’ career, Ola drove the final stage in Cyprus; setting a very respectable 13th fastest time!
Andreas said: "These have been the best two years of my life in the IRC with ŠKODA UK Motorsport and it’s an amazing feeling to be champion again. I have to thank ŠKODA for giving me the chance to return to international rallying and giving me the best available car to help me develop as a driver.
"We tried hard to win the Cyprus Rally and we really went for it, but three punctures cost us a lot of time. The mixed surface format and the hot and rough conditions were a real challenge, but it’s been great fun to fight with Nasser and I’m really pleased with our performance."
Pierfrancesco Zanchi, ŠKODA UK Motorsport Team Principal: "It’s been another great season. We started the year aiming to defend the title, which isn’t an easy thing to do. We’ve had our ups and downs, but I have to say I think we’ve done a really good job. We are really happy to celebrate back-to-back drivers’ titles with Andreas and to have played our part in helping ŠKODA win three manufacturer titles in a row."

VIDEO: Porsche 918 Spyder on the Nurburgring
Road & Track look at the Porsche 918 Spyder, testing on the Nordschleife. The mid-mounted 4.6 litre V8 produces 580bhp – which is more than the RS Spyder LMP2 race car it's based on – and the lithium-ion battery feeds 200 kW of power to the electric motor driving the front wheels. All of this resulted in a 7m14s lap... which is good, but in the light of the 2013 Nissan GT-R time of 7:18.6, is it quick enough?
