NEWS: Manthey Racing 911 GT3 RSR Legend Limited Edition Model

Are you a Manthey Racing 911 GT3 RSR N24 fan but can't stretch to the real thing? Why not collect this ace, deadly accurate endurance racing model of the legendary 2011 Manthey Racing GT3 RSR – record-holding multiple N24 winner.
The car that ran to victory that year – making history with five N24 wins in six years – was driven by Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Lucas Luhr, aka the 'Manthey dream team.' They drove a blinder and won the 39th edition of the endurance classic in the now iconic yellow-green Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. Team Principal and Green Hell legend, Olaf Manthey recalls the special value of that historic success: "That victory is particularly valuable for me because we made it against so many strong competitors as never before!"

To celebrate that special victory, Manthey has launched a 1:43 scale limited-edition model of just 500 die-cast models (of which only 450 will go on sale). And it's really rather cool – with the car on the left being what it looked like at the start of the race (all shiny and new) and the car on the right being post-24-Hr-race (all battle-scarred, dirty and on different rims). And there's all the facts and figures from the race printed on the base and display case. Nice work!
You can purchase the limited edition model on the newly created web site – www.manthey-shop.de – for €189.
And see more images of the model on our Facebook page – and read all about their 2013 N24 campaign in the next issue of Road Magazine, out very soon.

NEWS: Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak Test

Peugeot has let their 875bhp 208 T16 Pikes Peak beast loose on a full-chat altitude test – in preparation for the Colorado "ascent to the clouds" hill climb June 24-30th.
The gruelling test took place at Le Ventoux – an ultra-demanding and famous stage of the Tour de France.
"You’ve got a much bigger chance of seeing me drive to the top in a car than on a bike," quipped the reigning world rally champion Sébastien Loeb before the test, however.
Peugeot say: "You only need to drive a couple of kilometres up the road which leads from the test team’s basecamp to the summit to understand why this barren mountain has become such a huge legend among cycle racing fans. The steep slope and numerous turns do not permit the slightest respite as it strikes out towards the summit. The reward is a stunning panoramic view of France’s Provence region, while the vegetation becomes much sparser and the landscape more lunar as you approach the barren peak at an altitude of 1,909 metres.
"The last six kilometres – which we at Peugeot Sport used for the test – are simply breathtaking! It’s little wonder that ‘Le Ventoux’ is seen as one of the Tour de France’s most prestigious stages, and it comes as no surprise, either, to learn that it provided the backdrop to one of the most famous hill climb events in the pioneering days of the automobile industry. In 1902, even before the Pikes Peak Hill Climb was organised for the first time, the most advanced vehicles of the day would compete here, and the venue is perfectly suited as the location for Peugeot Sport’s last run ahead of next month’s showdown in North America."
"This is an important run because Pikes Peak is very different from a nice, smooth race track," noted Sébastien Loeb. "It is vital for us to evaluate the car on a terrain that is more like what we will find in the States. This road will give us a reasonably accurate idea..."
The world champion was visibly pleased to be back in the Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak car, now sporting its aggressive livery: "It’s not the power that impresses me anymore; I’ve got used to it," he reported. "It’s the speed at which the corners leap out at you which is more striking than round a circuit where there’s always a ‘100-metre’ board to show you where to brake. Here, you can be in fifth or sixth gear and you suddenly see mountainside ahead of you; you have to work out for yourself where you need to brake…"
With a power output of 875 horsepower, this car is no ordinary 208. "The steering is still very, very responsive, so it can be a little hairy keeping your foot to the floor though the fast portions," observed the French driver. "On wide slicks like this and at the sort of speeds I am getting up to, the slightest imperfection in the road surface really unsettles the car."
A switch to softer Michelin tyres and revised calibration for the steering helped to improve the situation.
Peugeot Sport’s Jean-Christophe Pailler, who is in charge of the project’s technical aspects, saw the open-air session as a dress rehearsal both for the team and the 208 T16 Pikes Peak car: "The mechanics and engineers need to familiarise themselves with working on the car in real-life conditions. They are getting an increasingly better grasp of how it responds to set-up changes and are analysing the tiniest detail or piece of feedback from Seb to refine its settings. It’s a learning process for everyone…"
The visit to Mont Ventoux also provided the team with the possibility of running at altitude. "Okay, the altitude isn’t as extreme here as it is at Pikes Peak which reaches 4,301 metres, but it’s a valuable intermediate step," added Jean-Christophe. "It allows us to see the differences in the way the engine functions, although we hope to suffer less from altitude-induced power-loss than our rivals because of the turbochargers we have chosen."
The next step is the journey to Colorado for more testing on the course which will only be available on a section-by-section basis on 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th and 16th June. After this final preparatory phase, the event will run in earnest from 24th June until 30th June, which is when Sébastien Loeb and the Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak car will at last get their chance to reach for the clouds for real!
Prior preparation prevent poor performance! We expect nothing less than something truly spectacular at Pikes Peak with this combination of Mr Loeb, Peugeot Sport & 875bhp, right?

BLOG: Pirelli World Challenge by Ashley Van Dyke

Our USA correspondent, Ashley Van Dyke reports on the double top 10 finishes at the newly re-vamped Circuit of The Americas for JCR Motorsports' Audi R8 LMS in the Pirelli World Challenge.

Ashley says:
Jeff Courtney and the No. 99 Kenda/RecStuff.com Audi R8 LMS rolled into the newly built Circuit of The Americas feeling confident coming off a very successful test just a few weeks prior to the event. Thursday allowed for more testing and Courtney was showing great pace heading into the Pirelli World Challenge race weekend, which was a scorcher – with temperatures reaching the high 90’s. And on Friday afternoon Courtney qualified the car P10 on the starting grid for Round 4.
"The car was great and I think we could have qualified near the front of the field had I not had a slight bobble on my best flyer lap," stated Courtney. "The lap times are so close from the session that less than half a second splits us from P3."
Courtney had a well-executed standing start in Round 4 and was able to get a pass in before the first red flag caution came out. When the field came to take the restart, Courtney started to experience overheating issues with the No. 99 Kenda/RecStuff.com Audi R8 LMS that would continue throughout Saturday’s race.
"The crew did a good job keeping my head in the race as it was very frustrating having to short-shift and find clean air to keep the car at a temperature that would allow us to finish the race," said Courtney.
The No. 99 Kenda/RecStuff.com Audi R8 LMS was able to withstand the 50 minute sprint race, despite overheating issues, and score a Top 10 finish.
The crew worked hard to make changes and best cool the car for Sunday’s race. Another strong start allowed for Courtney to jump from P14 to P11 by Turn 1.
"We had a great car again on Sunday," said Courtney. "For the first part of the race we were able to push hard up to P7. Unfortunately, we started experiencing overheating issues again and from that point forward it was just a matter of trying to hold our position."
Courtney finished P7 in Round 5. Watch the Pirelli World Challenge Live Stream from Rounds 4 & 5 here, www.world-challengetv.com.

NEWS: Matt Dawson Success In Shell Eco Marathon

Shell has just crowned England and Lions rugby star, Matt Dawson ‘Shell FuelSave Celebrity Driver of the Year’ after he recorded an astounding 94.86km on just one litre of fuel, pushing fuel efficiency limits to the maximum in the Shell eco-marathon.
Driving an ultra-energy efficient Shell Eco-marathon vehicle designed by students, on a challenging urban track, Matt Dawson battled it out against three other famous faces from across Europe. The head–to-head challenge put driving skills such as braking, accelerating and cornering to the test to see which celebrity could drive the furthest on the least amount of fuel.
Matt Dawson said: "I’m delighted to be named ‘Shell FuelSave Celebrity Driver of the Year’ but the real stars are the students. I’m so impressed by the creativity and skills of the student teams in approaching future energy challenges."
The celebrity challenge took place at the opening ceremony of Shell Eco-marathon Europe in Rotterdam. Shell Eco-marathon brings together thousands of young students from around 24 countries as they compete in ultra-energy efficient cars they have designed and built. The event sparks debate about the future of mobility and inspires young engineers to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency.
David Moss, Shell Retail General Manager UK and Nordics said: "It was great to see the celebrities perform and their success shows just how easy it is to save fuel and reduce fuel costs. That’s why Shell has launched Target One Million, which that aims to help one million drivers learn how to save fuel. Via a series of online games atwww.shell.co.uk/targetonemillion, drivers can discover tips to help improve fuel efficiency."
Bravo to Matt. More silverware for the mantle piece!

NEWS: RAC Car Sales Website Launched

The RAC has launched a website for car sales – RAC Cars (www.raccars.co.uk) – this week "promising to give consumers a new level of trust, transparency and confidence in the purchase of their next used vehicle." Interesting!
Created following the acquisition of Netcars.com, RAC Cars offers the motoring public access to quality cars from quality suppliers packaged with its unique 3-2-1 Go! reassurance plan, all of which is included in the price to customers. Every one of the 40,000+ (and growing) number of vehicles on the site come with a minimum of 3 months’ complimentary warranty, 2 months’ RAC Rescue and 1 five-day drive-away insurance plan. The RAC say: "This will allow buyers to enjoy driving their new vehicle with confidence as soon as they purchase."
The RAC Cars proposition was developed in response to extensive research with RAC members and motoring consumers around their concerns when buying a used vehicle. The research* revealed that nearly three-quarters (73%) of men and women fear buying a ‘lemon’ and a similar number (74%) want a warranty in case something goes wrong.
As a result the site will not include any private sales, traders or independent dealers that do not adhere to the 3-2-1 Go system!
As every car on sale comes from franchised or RAC approved dealers, the traditional used car worries around mechanical soundness are significantly reduced because vehicles are prepared to a consistently high standard. In addition, the majority of the stock will be between six months and five years old, and will have been well-maintained with an excellent service history.
A growing number of the cars on the site will be supplied through RAC approved dealers who comply with the 80-point RAC BuySure preparation standard. Going beyond 3-2-1 Go!, RAC BuySure includes a minimum of three months’ RAC warranty, three months’ RAC breakdown cover** and use of the RAC Accident Care service.
RAC Cars chairman Rupert Keane says: "The used car consumer finds the acquisition process fraught with anxiety and mistrust so the RAC’s decision to bring its name and skills to improve this experience is excellent news for anyone looking for reassurance when buying their next used car. That’s why we are positioning RAC Cars as ‘the safer way to buy a used car’ on our website.
"Our members listed quality, peace of mind and outstanding value for money as their top criteria and we aim to offer this. In order to achieve that goal we have to ensure the suppliers on www.raccars.co.uk are of the highest standard possible, their cars are the best available (we won’t stock every vehicle they have) and that there is a reassuring ‘safety blanket’ wrapped around each car. We call it 3-2-1 Go! Used car buyers have been in desperate need of a trusted service like RAC Cars for years. We are the only search engine with seven million driving members that focuses on providing such peace of mind to those acquiring their next vehicle. It’s what you expect from the RAC. It’s the RAC brand promise.”

NEWS: N24 2013: An Historic Event

The 2013 ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24-Hour was as thrilling as ever this year and most unusual – thanks to a forced 9.5-hour break between 11pm and 8am, caused by unreal levels of rainfall, spray and fog making the track unsafe. The event heralded a historic, dominant wet weather performance by the thunderous Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3s, with the Black Falcon overall winner and the Rowe Racing cars finishing third and fourth. The amazingly quick and consistent BMW Sport Trophy Team Z4 GT3 came second. No Audi. No Manthey. No 911. Weird! And the Prodrive-built Aston Martin GT3 (#007!) which was so dominant in the dry faded to 10th. It really was a tale of two halves in the two separated sections of the world's best endurance race – one seven hours, mainly dry, then one nine hours, mainly wet.
The highly experienced N24 regulars, Black Falcon and the AMG GT3 Mercedes-Benz SLS (one of seven in the event) secured their first overall win in the 24-Hours of Nürburgring, with Bernd Schneider (Germany), Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands), Sean Edwards (GB) and Nicki Thiim (Denmark) driving from sixth position on the grid to finish the legendary endurance race 2:39 minutes ahead of the second placed car after 88 laps.
Record-breaking five-time DTM champion Bernd Schneider had a largely trouble-free race in the SLS AMG GT3 Black Falcon – after an excursion off track on Monday morning ended without drama. The victory was rounded off by positions three and four for Rowe Racing, with Thomas Jäger a double entrant, taking the cockpit in two SLS AMG GT3s prepared by Rowe! Hardcore! In Gullwing #22, the former DTM driver, along with Klaus Graf, Jan Seyffarth and Nico Bastian (all Germany), came home in third place overall. Jäger, at the wheel of car number 23, aided by team-mates Lance David Arnold, Alexander Roloff and Jan Seyffarth (all Germany), finally took the chequered flag in fourth place.
Alexander Böhm, Black Falcon General Manager: "The ultra-reliable SLS AMG GT3 was once again the cornerstone for this historic victory. All the drivers did a great job – we were really fast, especially in the wet. A big thank you to all team members!"
Hans-Peter Naundorf, Rowe Racing Team Manager said: "I am extremely pleased with securing P3 and P4 with #22 and #23, especially as we were forced to retire last year while in the lead. My thanks go to all drivers and team members. Congratulations to the winning team, Black Falcon."
Uli Fritz, Head of AMG Customer Sports, commented: "We were not among the favourites to win, as we are not a works team but simply a customer outfit. We are very excited about this historic success. So far in 2013, we have won every major endurance race with the SLS AMG GT3 – in January, the Dubai (UAE) 24-hour race, in February, the Bathurst 12-Hours (Australia) and now the legendary 24- hour race here at the Nürburgring. My congratulations go to all AMG customer teams, and many thanks to tyre partner Dunlop for the excellent manner in which they have supported our team."
And Ola Kaellenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH said: "A great success for our customer teams Black Falcon and Rowe Racing. I am very pleased that we have succeeded at only the third attempt in taking the top spot in the SLS AMG GT3. This victory is the best confirmation of our customer sports programme."
Meanwhile, Toto Wolff, Head of Motorsport at Mercedes-Benz added: "This victory in the 24- hour race at the Nürburgring is the just reward for the loyalty of our customer teams. Mercedes-Benz has a magnificent tradition in endurance racing that stretches back as far as the 1950s. The Nürburgring has always had a great importance and symbolic meaning for Mercedes-Benz, because this is where the legend of the Silver Arrow was born, so it is all the more gratifying to witness the success here today of the AMG customer teams. The Mercedes-Benz name stands for performance, quality and reliability – which are the perfect prerequisites for winning such a tough race on the most demanding racetrack in the world. I extend my congratulations to our customer teams, Black Falcon and Rowe. Credit is also due to Mercedes-AMG for their outstanding support without which this success could not have been achieved."
Driver Bernd Schneider of Black Falcon, # 9 said: "Our car was super to drive, especially in the wet, and even while the surface was drying out, we were always up with the leading group. I’ve attempted the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring on several previous occasions, but this is the first time I’ve ever crossed the finish line. My congratulations and thanks go to the whole team. The guys at Black Falcon did a great job."
Thomas Jäger, Rowe Racing # 22 added: "Once again, we have seen what a fabulous car the SLS AMG GT3 is to drive, even under these very difficult conditions here at the Nürburgring. Our third and fourth place finishes represent a great team result for us, and obviously I’m delighted for the guys at Black Falcon on their historic victory."
And Lance David Arnold, of Rowe # 23 said: "I’m very pleased that I was able to finish fourth on my very first outing for the AMG customer team ROWE RACING. This was very tough race, not least because of the heavy rain and the constantly changing conditions. I’d like to express my gratitude and congratulations to the whole team."
And we'd like to thank them for the amazing V8 burble and pace they showed in the epic race. The SLS contingent were a joy to watch and have really aded something special to this unique racing event.

HISTORY
Without doubt, this year's N24 top news story – apart from the glam of 007 Daniel Craig turning up to pilot a DB5 in the 100 Aston Martin parade prior to the race – had to be the Aston Martin Rapide S, powered by Hybrid Hydrogen.
The car, built by Aston Martin Racing in conjunction with Alset Global (a technical partnership made in heaven, which can not be underestimated for the future of motor racing/performance cars) and driven by Dr Ulrich Bez (AM CEO) became the first hydrogen-powered car to compete in, and to undertake zero CO2 emissions laps of, an international motor race.
Aston Martin CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez said: "We have exceeded our already very ambitious target of completing a full lap of the Nürburgring on hydrogen."
Aston Martin partnered with Alset Global on the project to showcase its commitment to engineering innovation in its centenary year and should be applauded for doing this at the N24, not in a road car, lapping around the M25. Bravo!
The no. 100 Aston Martin Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S was the sole entry within a special E1-XP2 classification. The Hybrid Hydrogen system, comprising a hydrogen fuel supply system, tank and proprietary engine management system, ran faultlessly throughout, demonstrating the reliability and durability of the technology which could be on a series production vehicle within a couple of years. In the race, the car reached top speeds of around 160 mph / 255 kph on pure hydrogen, producing zero emissions.
"This is a historic day for two reasons: besides being the first hydrogen-powered race car to compete and undertake zero CO2 emissions laps, it has showcased the most practical technology available to fundamentally, and within a very short period of time, address the challenge of global emissions, without disrupting the automotive industry," said Jose Ignacio Galindo, CEO and founder of Austria-based Alset Global.
The hydrogen was supplied by Alset Global’s partner, Linde, via its TrailH2-gas mobile refuelling truck. Hydrogen was stored at 350 bar and a full refill was reduced to just 30 seconds per pitstop by the end of the race.

Road Magazine is about to publish an N24 special and we have all the news on this momentous moment from Aston Martin and Alset, with exclusive interviews and comments from everyone involved, as well as lots of scoops on the rest of the event itself and a behind the scenes with the Team Falken Motorsport's GT3 R. Stay tuned for more and see some sneak preview images at our Facebook page of the best, maddest race on the planet.

NEWS: Aston Martin Rapide S Hydrogen Hybrid History @ ADAC Nürburgring 24-Hour

Aston Martin Racing are all set to make history at the 41st Nurburging 24-Hours this weekend – racing their ground-breaking hybrid Hydrogen Aston Martin Rapide S V12 twin turbo, developed in partnership with Hydrogen experts, Alset Global. And they will also be racing in a international championship-winning V12 Vantage GT3 and a close-to-production specification V12 Vantage as well as the record-breaking Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S.
When the HH Rapide S races on Sunday in the N24, Aston Martin’s new four-door, four-seat sports car will become the first hydrogen-powered car to compete in an international event as well as the first zero CO2 emissions sports car to complete a race pace lap at the Nürburgring 24-hour race. The car will compete in an experimental class (E1-XP) having passed rigorous technical and safety assessments by the German motorsport authority the DMSB to be granted approval to race.
It will be able to complete full laps with zero CO2 emissions and will be refuelled after each stint with 3.5kg of hydrogen as well as gasoline.
Working in partnership with hydrogen experts Alset Global, Aston Martin’s engineers have developed a prototype twin turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 engine that powers the incredible Nürburgring car.
Capable of running on pure gasoline, pure gaseous hydrogen, or a blend of both, the Hybrid Hydrogen race car showcases Aston Martin’s commitment to engineering innovation. In pure hydrogen mode the car emits virtually only water from the exhaust.
The Hybrid Hydrogen system comprises a hydrogen fuel rail, storage tanks and proprietary engine management system. Safety is paramount and the system includes four ultra-high strength carbon fibre tanks holding a total of 3.5kg of hydrogen stored at a pressure of 350bar.
And we have been invited to follow all three Aston Martins at the world's greatest race! Happy days! We will be bringing you the amazing Aston's story home from the Eifel in a forthcoming special of Road Magazine, also featuring many cool cars from the 2013 N24.
The Aston Martin Rapide S – with technology developed with Alset Global – has already set a record as the world's first hydrogen-fuelled zero CO2 emission lap of the 24 km Nordschleife. The lap was completed on Saturday 27th April with Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez at the wheel of the prototype Aston Martin Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S. That was a perfect test run ahead of a formal record-breaking attempt at the ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nürburgring (N24).

Aston Martin CEO Dr Ulrich Bez, will be one of four drivers behind the wheel of the Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S in the 24-hour race. He said: "The prospect of making history at the Nürburgring 24 Hours with the Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S in this, our centenary year, is a great thing for Aston Martin. Alongside our partners Alset Global, we have worked incredibly hard to prove out this exciting engineering and I’m looking forward to taking the wheel of the race car at the Nürburgring on Sunday.

"I am incredibly proud of the Aston Martin team, and our partners Alset Global. We have written a little motorsport history with this qualifying lap as well as finishing the four-hour race on hydrogen and, of course, it bodes extremely well for our participation in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in three weeks’ time.
"To have run full laps on hydrogen gas alone during the four-hour event is an exceptional ‘first’, and I now hope that we can stabilise the system and further improve the Rapide S so we can complete the 24-hour race on May 19 with many zero emission laps."
The Aston Martin Racing team are aiming for numerous zero emission laps – in addition for their P1 class aims for their outstanding GT3 petrol V12 beast (pictured below) and a V12 Vantage which is as close to production specification as possible.

The third car in the line up is a V12 Vantage in close-to-production specification, modified to satisfy the N24 regulations. David King, Director of Special Projects and Motorsport at Aston Martin, explains: “It’s important to us that we don’t only show what we can do with pioneering technologies and race car development, but that we showcase the ability that our road cars have to deal with the demanding and gruelling challenges that the Nordschleife can create.”

To make life even more special for Aston Martin fans, leading up to the main event the Aston Martin Centenary Parade – a lap of the Nordschleife with 100 VIP and customer cars – will take place to celebrate 100 years of Aston Martin and to offer customers the chance to share in the Nürburgring experience that is so close to the brand.

Aston Martin will compete in the ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24 Hours on May 19-20 for the eighth successive year with the goal of maintaining its 100% finishing record. More than 200 cars will start the 24-hour race, which runs on the daunting 22 km circuit that combines the legendary Nordschleife with the modern Grand Prix track.

Bravo to Aston Martin & Alset Global. Can't wait to witness history with you firsthand this weekend...

NEWS: RAC To Include Legal Expenses Insurance To Two Million Members

The RAC is set to include up to £50,000 legal expenses insurance – Motor Legal Care – for around two million of its individual breakdown members.
Supporting the organisation’s vision to be seen as the "motorist’s champion," the introduction of Motor Legal Care will enable qualifying RAC members* to pursue claims for uninsured losses following UK road accidents should they wish to.
The RAC said: "Protecting members as both drivers and passengers, Motor Legal Care is worth £25 and provides cover for legal costs up to £50,000 as well as assistance with a replacement vehicle while theirs is being repaired. We believe Motor Legal Care will revolutionise the legal expenses insurance market which has traditionally been dominated by brokers and direct insurers selling the cover as a costly add-on to motor policies."
The RAC took the decision to include Motor Legal Care with new and existing breakdown policies in light of the Jackson Reforms which are designed to put an end to the compensation culture in personal injury accident claims. The changes, which came into effect on 1 April, include the banning of referral fees for passing on personal injury cases and a limit to the fees that can be recouped from bringing ‘no win, no fee’ claims. RAC Motor Legal Care provides cover to qualifying members* from 1 April 2013. However, the RAC can also assist with claims dating back up to three years.
In addition, the RAC is also now providing Accident Care to members who need to have their vehicles rescued or recovered following road accidents. Wherever possible, the RAC will aim to recover the cost of this service on the member’s behalf.
RAC insurance director Kerry Michael said: "While a change to the personal injury claim system was clearly needed, there is a danger that some people will find it far more difficult to get access to justice. By including legal expenses insurance within our industry-leading breakdown cover, we believe we are making it easier and more affordable for our members to pursue legitimate personal injury claims should they want to. Our Accident Care service is also designed to make our members’ lives simpler in the event of an accident. The last thing you need after a road accident is the added concern and financial burden of having to get your stricken vehicle recovered."
For more information on Motor Legal Care, visit: www.rac.co.uk/motorlegal or call RAC Membership Services on 0800 092 6830.
And for more information on Accident Care, visit www.rac.co.uk/insurance/accident-legal/accident-care or call 0800 0966 999.

* Qualifying members refers to individual customers who have bought their breakdown membership directly from the RAC rather than via a corporate partner.

NEWS: Loeb Set To Attack RallycrossRX

Sebastian Loeb is having an amazing year of motorsport! Having just won the Rally Argentina in his Citroen DS3 WRC (stopping the VW Polo R WRC's run of wins) and fresh from bouts of McLaren  MP4-12C GT racing, super Seb is all set to race RallycrossRX in Loheac in the FIA European Rallycross Championship for the first time, on August 31-September 1 on home soil. Watch out rallycross regulars!
Loeb will drive a Citroen DS3 Supercar in the event which forms round seven of the nine-event championship. The 39-year-old, nine-time World Rally Champion has added the RallycrossRX outing to his calendar in a year in which he has embarked on a diverse range of events including rounds of the World Rally Championship, the FIA GT Championship and Pikes Peak Hill Climb.
The Frenchman has previously driven a rallycross car in competition only once; using a Citroen DS3 Supercar to win an X Games gold medal in Los Angeles last July.
"2013 is definitely a year full of challenges. I received an invitation from the [Rallycross Loheac] organiser Patrick Germain, and I decided to answer positively," said Loeb. "Apart from the X Games, I have no experience in Rallycross so I will probably have to fight hard against fast specialists in a very high level championship.
"I enjoyed my experience at the X Games last year and I expect something similar. Loheac is the temple of Rallycross. This is a well-known event with always a very big crowd. In a sportive side, this is also a very tough race.
"I couldn’t let this opportunity to participate at least once in my career pass, especially because it is with a Citroën DS3. I am looking forward to go to Loheac, meet the fans and race there."
Rallycross Loheac, 30km south of Rennes in Brittany, is widely accepted as being the best attended rallycross event in world. Regularly attracting more than 30,000 spectators it has been a cornerstone of the French championship for many years and, this year, is included in the FIA European Rallycross Championship for the first time since 2001.
Bon chance Seb! Sure the 600bhp gravel experience will help get you more used to the 850bhp Pug you'll be blasting up Pike Peak's tarmac, gravel and sand later in the year!

RallycrossRX is the FIA European Rallycross Championship, promoted since 2013, by IMG Motorsports, part of IMG Worldwide. Rallycross combines all the best aspects of motor racing in one. It's fast, competitive and spectacular. It's bold, authentic and relatable. Within it are all the elements of four-wheel racing that you love; and RallycrossRX is the pinnacle.

VIDEO: N24 Preview With Falken Motorsports

We are on an unashamed N24 tip at the moment, leading up to the best race on the planet – ADAC Nurburgring 24-Hour – which kicks off in five days and seven hours time, as of right now, not that we're counting or anything! Road Magazine will be covering the event for you lucky peeps, across Facebook, Twitter, here on the blog and in the magazine. And one of the teams we will be focusing closely on is Falken Motorsport, who have an upgraded Porsche 911 GT3 R (Type 997) this year – still in the unmissable green and blue livery. They are aiming for a top five finish, possibly even up on the podium with the new GT3 R. And there's no reason why that's not possible, given the pace of the new car and the speed and experience in their retained driver line-up of Sebastian Asch, Peter Dumbreck, Wolf Henzler and Martin Ragginger. The new car features a raft of improvements over their past N24 cars – with a (N24 Green Hell critical) new aero package that includes wider wings, new splitter and double canards at the front with a larger rear wing to increase downforce, and there's enlarged cooling vents around both the front and rear arches, enabling the team to run wider 12” rims at the front (0.5” wider than last year), and fatter, new compound Falken tyres. And the new GT3 R sports a bank of four front headlamps/strobes and all – to get the slower traffic cleared and hopefully, avoid accidents. "We are gearing up to give it everything we've got for the fans and aiming for a top ten place in 24-Hour Race" says Austrian racer and Porsche factory racer, Martin Ragginger. Bring! It! On!

NEWS: Goodwood Revival Jim Clark Tribute

The 2013 Goodwood Revival (13-15th September) is set to pay a tribute to the legendary Scottish F1 and rallying star, Jim Clark, on the 50th anniversary of his first F1 World Championship victory.
A daily track parade at the Goodwood Motor Circuit will include a variety of Jim Clark’s most famous cars to honour the life and achievements of this incredible and versatile man – featuring "a wealth of famous competition cars, spanning a variety of different genres in the course of his all too brief career." Clark achieved success in single-seaters, sports, GT and saloon cars, and even turned his hand to rallying, setting fastest stage times on the 1966 RAC Rally in a Lotus-Cortina. The track parade will read like a shopping list of great racing cars from the 1960s, including the Lotus 25 in which Clark won the F1 World Championship in 1963, the Lotus-Cortina in which he won the 1964 British Saloon Car Championship, and the Lotus 38 in which he won the Indianapolis 500 in 1965.
Clark died tragically in an F2 race at Hockenheim on 7 April 1968 and was a much-loved motorsport face. As such, fellow star drivers of his era such as Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, John Surtees and Tony Brooks will be attending the Revival to honour Jim Clark's all-too-short career.
Jim Clark competed at Goodwood on many occasions in the early 1960s, and, along with fellow Scot Sir Jackie Stewart, jointly holds the lap record of 1m20.4, set at the circuit’s final F1 race in 1965. Goodwood Revival founder Lord March fondly recalls meeting him as a motor racing-obsessed boy, saying: "Jim was always very nice to me – quiet, charming, a thoroughly good guy; not brash like some of the other drivers. He was an absolute world-class driver, and effortless is a good way to describe his ability."
Tickets, grandstand seats, camping and other products for the 2013 Goodwood Revival can be purchased via the Goodwood website (www.goodwood.com/motor sport/), or the Ticket Hotline: +44 (0)1243 755055.

VIDEO: Nürburgring Road-Legal Subaru Lap Record

A 400bhp, tuned but road-legal Subaru Impreza built by Revolution Motorsport in the UK has set a new lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit, of 7m53.08s, on off-the-shelf Yokohama ADVAN rubber – beating Tommi Makinen's previous road-legal Subaru lap of 7:55, set in April 2010 (although it must be said that record in worse weather has stood for two years and was set in a bog-stock, 300bhp WRX STi Sedan, on much less sticky rubber, with 100+bhp less and standard brakes/suspension/aero (see that classic rally slag Green Hell lap here). Revolution's PR men say: "The concept behind the car was to set the fastest lap for a road-legal Subaru Impreza. While the car was highly modified, it was driven directly to the circuit, completed its record lap and was then driven back to the UK, all on the same tyres, fuel and brake pads. A handful of tools and spares travelled in the car but it was a genuine road-going car." The aero-kitted Subaru was modified with the 255/40x17 ADVAN A048R tyres, suspension, wheel and brake tuning and a stronger engine with Cosworth internal components, a Turbo Technics modified turbocharger and fuel additives. It knocked out 420bhp for the lap, despite being tuned to achieve 500bhp. The driver for this lap was Fredy Lienhard, proprietor of Nordschleife specialists Rent4Ring, with an estimated 20,000Km of experience under his belt. He set the new record on his first attempt in the car – despite the car's wanton desire to understeer. How he got it turned in on some bends is beyond me! Check out the full video with telemetry above. Revolution Motorsport's Glenn Campbell said: "We are very happy with the new record. We built the car to celebrate our 15th anniversary and did that in style. We have a very long-standing relationship with Yokohama and always use their products on extreme projects such as this one. We built the car from scratch specifically for this project and I am delighted that we were successful." Managing Director of Yokohama HPT Ltd, David Seward, said: "I would like to offer our congratulations to Glenn and the rest of the Revolution team for an amazing achievement. We have worked with Revolution for many years and in that time, have come to understand that when they say they are going to do something, they do it and I am delighted that Yokohama was able to be part of their success." Fair play to Revolution, who are a great bunch of car (especially Subaru!) enthusiasts and run a good company. And good driving Fredy! Anyone out there with a road-legal Subaru think they can better it?

NEWS: Sebastian Loeb Declares 875bhp Peugeot 208 T16 Pike Peaker "a rocket!"

Nine-times WRC rallying God and French dude, Sébastien Loeb’s has finally got his first impressions of the 875bhp Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak car, describing it as "a rocket," and saying he's never driven anything that accelerates so fast and it has the stopping power like a Formula 1 single-seater, more than in a rally car! Sébastien Loeb is all set to drive 'the race to the clouds' in Colorado on 30th June.
When Sébastien Loeb’s helicopter landed alongside the high security track at La Ferté-Vidame, in North Western France, the rally star believed he was in for a routine test session. After just a handful of laps in the car, he realised that this was something different however…
He said: "The 208 T16 Pikes Peak is a rocket! It’s so powerful! The first time you drive it, each gear change practically stuns you. The shifts are really brutal, and it takes a little time to anticipate the sudden jarring. You get used to it, but it was quite disorienting to begin with."
The Frenchman may have seen it all on world rallying’s most challenging stages, but his words were far from blasé after his first taste of the 208 T16 Pikes Peak.
"I’ve never driven anything that accelerates so fast!" he remarked. "In the lower gears, a Formula 1 car doesn’t deliver maximum power. With the Peugeot, though, it’s bang, bang, bang as you move up the box from standstill. Due to its four-wheel drive transmission and turbocharged engine, its pull-away performance is phenomenal! You find yourself in sixth gear at 150mph in no time at all!"
Indeed, with a 0-62mph (100kph) time of 1.8s, the 208 T16 Pikes Peak would leave any F1 car standing…
It is not only the gearbox which made a big impression on rallying’s superstar.
"Due to its aerodynamic downforce and wide tyres, its braking is amazing, too." he exclaimed. "The 208 package is a combination of the best of several worlds: it’s got the downforce of a Formula 1 car, the wide tyres of an endurance racing prototype and a differential, like a WRC car…" In short, it’s a cocktail that gives you wings…
As the familiarisation process continued, Sébastien Loeb was clearly won over by the unique experience: "I have driven many types of car in my career, but this is very, very different. Its acceleration, performance and stopping power are more like those of a Formula 1 single-seater than a rally car. Its handling is fantastic as well; there’s so much grip, and the all-wheel drive transmission makes it very stable. It’s got huge potential."
Like any thoroughbred, however, the 208 T16 Pikes Peak will need to be broken in, since Sébastien Loeb has no intention of allowing the car to be the one in control. On the contrary; with nine World Rally titles to his name, he approaches the mission with his trademark calm: "This track isn’t very wide and there aren’t any run-offs, so I’m taking things one step at a time. I don’t know what the car’s limits are yet but it was important to do this run on a circuit today. Now we have a better idea of where we stand and a better overview of the car’s potential. After that, the challenge will be to try to feel totally at one with the car on the Pikes Peak Hill Climb itself. That will take some work…"
When the big day comes to race to the Colorado summit at an altitude of 4,301 metres, Sébastien Loeb will need to be capable of mastering every buck and kick of the thoroughbred if he is to steer clear of the many pitfalls that await him along the giddy 20-kilometre course. And that will require perfect osmosis between the French champion and his extremely powerful steed.
To give this fusion every chance of happening, Peugeot Sport has scheduled a busy test programme at circuits, on roads and at altitude as the next phase of this extraordinary project which the multiple World Rally Champion finds particularly stimulating: "I really can’t wait to get to drive the 208 T16 Pikes Peak in Colorado!"
And we can not wait to see what the world's greatest rally driver can do at Pikes Peak, can you?
See a load of cool images of the test here.

NEWS: Rugby Star Matt Dawson's FuelSave Driving Challenge

England World Cup rugby hero, Matt Dawson has been taking part in a Shell-sponsored FuelSave Driving Challenge – to drive from Preston to London (280 miles) on one tank of fuel.
The mission dubbed "One celebrity, one tank of fuel, one car, one goal: to see how far they can travel" is a build up to the forthcoming annual Shell Eco-marathon Europe.
Matt's been charged with the task of driving the 280 miles from Preston to London as economically as possible in a VW Golf, using Shell's FuelSave Unleaded.
And along the challenge route, Matt Dawson will drive through Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent, Birmingham and Oxford. He will visit consumers at selected Shell forecourts to talk about the importance of saving fuel and meet with Shell Eco-marathon students to learn about the future of energy.
The Shell Eco-marathon is a Shell initiative that challenges student teams from around the world to design, build and test ultra-energy efficient vehicles. This year’s European leg is being held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, from May 15-19. A total of 224 teams from 24 countries have been invited to take part. During the Shell FuelSave Driving Challenge, four UK student teams from the University of Central Lancashire, Staffordshire University, Aston University and University of Oxford will offer Matt Dawson expert advice and encouragement on how to save fuel.
Speaking before the challenge Matt Dawson said: "I am really excited to be taking on the Shell FuelSave Driving Challenge and sharing fuel saving tips with UK drivers. The demand for energy is set to increase in the future and by using the right fuel and making simple changes to our driving habits, we can all reduce our fuel consumption and costs. I hope by taking on this challenge I can show UK drivers that it’s easy to save fuel and encourage them to try it for themselves."
Matt Dawson is not the only celebrity taking on the Shell FuelSave Driving Challenge; the sportsman will be competing against three other celebrities from Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey, all aiming to win the ‘Shell FuelSave Celebrity Driver of the Year’ title. To win the title, all four celebrities will meet at the Shell Eco-marathon on May 17, where they will put their fuel efficiency knowledge to the test as they go head-to-head in a final challenge.
David Moss, Shell Retail General Manager UK and Nordics said: "We’re delighted to have Matt Dawson on board to represent the UK in the Shell FuelSave Driving Challenge. The challenge is just one part of our ongoing efforts to educate and inspire drivers on how to save fuel. This includes launching the Shell FuelSave Target One Million campaign, which aims to help one million drivers around the world learn how to save fuel. Via a series of online games at www.shell.co.uk/targetonemillion, drivers can discover simple tips to help them save fuel and cut their fuel costs."

NEWS: Sabine Schmitz Joins Forces With Ron Simons Racing

Two of our greatest Green Hell buddies – Ron Simons and Sabine Schmitz – have (finally!) joined forces, offering yet another string to the fabulous RSRNurburg and RSRSpa track experience bow.
"Ring queen" Sabine will now be on hand (most days of the week!) to offer her infamous 'hot taxi laps' around the world's greatest circuits – Spa-Francorchamps and Nurburgring Nordschleife – in the superb, eclectic mix of RSR track hire cars. Quite a heady combination, I can tell you – having sampled both over the years. Certainly a memory of a lifetime.
For those who do not know, RSRNurburg (run by dude ex-racer, Ron Simons) have built a reputation of excellence over the past 15 years at the famous Nurburgring for driver training, instruction, track car rentals, corporate events and Road Tours. And Sabine Schmitz has raced the world over, but her true passion belongs at the Nurburgring where without doubt, she is most recognizable figure at the Green Hell, and Spa.
The fabulous Sabine Schmitz said: "I am really thrilled to be able to work with RSR. Their huge fleet of modern cars and wide range of services makes sense for us to create a partnership. We were looking for a reliable and reputable company to help service our clients...it only takes a small glance at RSR’s testimonials to know we are in capable hands.
"The goal is to extend the available offerings, and RSR enables us to do this. Taxi Laps at Spa are really great, throwing the car around on this Formula track is just a joy, I can push so hard!” And in closing, “I am pleased to have formed this partnership. RSR are a professional company that have built a successful business on a reputation of excellence that is known and respected worldwide. Bringing their cars, expertise, various driving & instruction services and programs into our packages will open up new opportunities for our customers from around the world. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with them."
And the ace Ron Simmons added: "We are extremely excited to partner with Sabine. I have followed her career over the years, we have worked together in the past and now we cement this with a formal partnership to continue our combined success” Ron goes on to explain; “This partnership gives our existing customer base another range of options to choose from and now we have the quickest female racer in the world, certainly a force to be reckoned with on track!."
