VIDEO: TOTB XI 2012 Film by TC Media

Here's a film of the TOTB drag and handling event for 2012, by TC Media. About this year's event, where Andy Forrest's amazing Impreza RA set a new record of 8.77s on the 1/4-mile and four drivers hit over 200mph on the standing Km, the TOTB team said: "TOTB XI has already been rated by the Ten Of The Best Community as the best one yet! Although this year behind the scenes Straightliners MD Trevor Duckworth has made some important changes, they have proven to be exactly what TOTB needed. It has been said in the past that stripping the event back closer to it's roots would re-generate that reknowned "family" feel, and it has! With support from key sponsors and the timeless efforts from the Straightliners crew this year truly was amazing. The cars were outstanding out on the Drag-strip and the Handling circuit with many crew members remarking just how hard the drivers, mechanics and teams have worked over the years to show how reliable and well built their cars have become compared to previous years and is a testament to their commitment and loyalty to the event. With four drivers breaking the 200mph barrier and Andy Forrest in his Subaru Impreza belting out a TOTB record of 8.77s this year was a major turning point for the teams, drivers and the event itself. Eleven years ago Simon Hinshelwood's love for performance cars and the dream of an event that would bring car lovers together was born, he sadly passed away in 2009 but his dream lives on, and every year despite the weather forecast, Simon shines down on Elvington Airfield and he no doubt has a laugh at everyone when they run for cover under the odd shower or too, but his dream lives on in all that attend, compete and speak about the UK's No.1 performance car event. This is the best event, because of where it comes from and what it stands for and that will never change whilst the likes of Trevor Duckworth and Straightliners crew have anything to do with it, because it is them that attract the 1000's of smiling faces, the inspiring teams, the friendly clubs and the true soul of the UK Performance Car communities....come on TOTB XII, we really can't wait!" See more videos and get all the results at the website – http://www.totb.co.uk – or on the Facebook group at: http://www.facebook.com/groups/tenofthebest

NEWS: One-make Atom Cup UK is Go!

Ariel Motor Company has announced exciting plans for its one-make Atom Cup UK race series in 2013 – featuring a 245bhp, 510Kg, 'Cup' spec Atom, with a roll cage, two-litre i-VTEC engine with six-speed gearbox, Alcon brakes (adjustable bias), Yokohama A048 tyres, Ohlins adjustable suspension, Race Technology dash and safety gear. The new series – which will bring first rate hospitality with professional levels of catering and entertainment, be highly social and make it the sort of place you can bring your family too happily – will run alongside other motorsport, as part of the MSVR package run by Motorsportvision. It will take place at eight premier UK tracks: Brands Indy & GP, Cadwell Park, Oulton Park, Donington Park and Silverstone GP and National. There will be three packages available – Bronze (car, entry fees & hospitality) at £53,195 + VAT, Silver (as Bronze, plus tyres & fuel and track assist) at £59,995 + VAT and Gold (as silver, plus transportation and storage), at £69,652 + VAT. The new Cup Atom will be capable of 145mph, thanks to its 480bhp per ton power to weight figure, and the racing should be dead close. But there's enough adjustability left in the car to make set-up all important, as well as driver skill. It looks bloody ace! Like everything Ariel do. Bravo to them for pulling it off. Can't wait to report on the first race next year. Find out more on Facebook: www.facebook.com/atomcupuk and @atomcup on Twitter.

VIDEO: Gary Hawkins Corvette Stingray Brands GP In-Car

Check old this fabulous slice of in-car imagery and old-skool-cool car racing, shot by Gary Hawkins (see more of his great work here: http://www.ghp.moonfruit.com/) of Christian Dick fighting his way around Brands GP Circuit in a 1970's Corvette Stingray. The racing took place in the Heritage Grand Touring car Challenge at the MSVR GP Weekend. Quite a handful of a motor, with third and forth gear oversteer  – in and out of the corners, even on the straights – on the back side of the GP track. Fabulous retro racing stuff. Imagine what it's like in the wet!

NEWS: Audi R8 e-tron Sets Nürburgring Nordschleife EV Lap Record

Audi's exciting new R8 e-tron has just set a new lap record at the ultra-challenging Nürburgring Nordschleife for electrically powered production vehicles. Racing driver, Markus Winkelhock put in a time of 8:09.099 minutes on the 12.92-mile track, in the new all-electric sports car with 280 kW (equivalent to approximately 380PS)... adding another Green Hell accolade to their overall wins at the 24-hour races at the Nürburgring (oh, an and Le Mans!). "The R8 e-tron has given a magnificent demonstration of its potential on the toughest race track in the world," said Michael Dick, AUDI AG Board Member for Technical Development. Dick, who completed a fast lap himself in the R8 e-tron, added: "The record-setting drive confirmed that we are on the right track. To us, electric mobility has never been about sacrifice, but rather is about emotion, sportiness and driving pleasure."A comparison with the current record lap driven by a production car with a conventional combustion engine shows just how impressive the 8:09.099-minute time really is. The record time of 7:11.57 minutes was achieved by a Gumpert Apollo Sport, which is powered by a 700PS Audi V8 petrol engine. The all-electric Audi R8 e-tron was just over one minute behind that. Impressive...
The drive system of the Audi R8 e-tron that Markus Winkelhock drove to the world record is identical to that of the road-going model that will enter production towards the end of the year. The car’s electric motors generate a combined output of 280 kW and 820 Nm of torque; more than 4,900 Nm (3,614.05 lb-ft) is distributed to the rear wheels virtually from a standing start. The Audi R8 e-tron accelerates from zero to 62mph in just 4.6 seconds. Its top speed is normally limited to 124mph (and Markus Winkelhock drove two fast laps in one go in a second R8 e-tron that was limited to 124mph, recording 8:30.873 and 8:26.096 minutes, both well under the important nine-minute threshold); 155mph was approved for the record-setting lap. It has a range of 133 miles, although most likely not at this sort of race pace. And it weighs in at just 1,780 kilograms, despite the large battery, thanks to an all aluminium body.
"The record drives were a fantastic experience for me," said Markus Winkelhock. The 32-year-old, who lives near Stuttgart, has a high standard for comparison – the Audi R8 LMS ultra, in which he, along with Marc Basseng, Christopher Haase and Frank Stippler, won the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring a few weeks ago. "Of course, the R8 e-tron is a production car, not a racing car with the assistance of aerodynamics," Winkelhock emphasised. "But with its low centre of gravity and rear biased weight distribution, it brings with it a lot of sporty qualities. The torque with which the electric motors propel the car uphill beats everything that I know – even if they make hardly any noise in the process, which at the start was really a completely new experience for me. In places where I really need traction, the torque vectoring – the displacement of the torque between the powered wheels – really helps me."
Michael Dick proudly summed up events after the record-setting drive at the Nürburgring. "Within just a few weeks we’ve taken on some big challenges and in the process we’ve shown that we are at the forefront with all of our drive concepts," he said, adding: "We won the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in May in the Audi R8 LMS ultra with a ten-cylinder engine. In mid-June we triumphed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Audi R18 e-tron quattro – the first overall victory for a hybrid-electric vehicle in the toughest race in the world. And now we’ve set another record with the all-electric-drive R8 e-tron on the most demanding track there is."

PROJECT CARS: Project S4 Track Preparation

Project S4, our old dog leaning new tricks, is getting ready for some track time later this "Summer" (good job it's equipped with Quattro in this weather!). We're just about to go up to our good pal Dave Green's garage at Henstead Motors (http://www.henstead-motorsport.co.uk/) to fit a raft of suspension upgrades and finish off the brake kit fit, in preparation for some track days, end of this season and into Autumn and Winter (we like to slide). First up, we're about to fit the Tarox (http://en.tarox.com/) grooved, heat-treated, hand finished solid rear discs and re-bleed the system to maximum stopping power, fade-free on track as it has been on the road, we hope. Great piece of kit. Then we are setting about optimising the S4's suspension – already upgraded with Bilstein PSS9 coilovers, which are fabulous. We're fitting a full set of Powerflex (http://www.powerflex.co.uk/) high performance Polyurethane suspension bushes, replacing 12-year-old rubber with 30% stiffer, longer lasting polybushes, which should reduce tyre wear, increase braking and cornering stability and reduce inertia no end... not to mention match the Bilsteins in upping the grip level, further still. High hopes for these innovative, great value products. Speaking of grip, we're also fitting an upgraded, heavy duty rear swaybar (anti-roll bar or stabiliser bar to some), along with camber and caster inducing chassis control devices from Australian suspension genius brand, Whiteline (http://www.whiteline.com.au/). Most effective, best value modification you can make to your suspension... just maybe?

VIDEO: Kenny Of The Block Gymkhana V: Ultimate Urban Plyground, S.F

It's been live for only 24 Hours and already has over 5.1 million hits! Yup, Kenny of the Block is back, with his fifth Gymkhana – The Ultimate Urban Playground, ripping up the streets of San Francisco. It's longer than the others, at almost 10 minutes, and features the usual incredible driving skill antics in Ken's Ford Fiesta Hybrid Function Hoon Vehicle (HFHV)... all 650bhp and aggro antilag of it. 0-60mph, just 1.8s! Directed by Ben Conrad and with cinematography by Stephen Blackman, it features some fabulous new wide angle slow mo shots, Kenny helmet camera angles and some fabulous new bullet camera shots of the suspension getting a serious workout over the famous San Fran yumps... BIG air. Our favourite shot is at 5:50, with a huge sideways air shot, and God only knows how ken managed to catch that slide. The big finish with Ken smoking his tyres on a boat in the harbour is amazing too, as is the fact he got the bridge shut for the opening shot. Modern advertising at its genius best... DC Shoes and clothing sales sure to keep on climbing. Bravo Mr Block: Job done!

NEWS: Zircotec Protects 3000bhp World Record Dragster

Our clever pals at Zircotec have been busy protecting Europe’s fastest street legal drag car from the heat of competition and the force of 3000bhp. Zircotec’s heat shield materials and ceramic coatings (www.zircotec.com) protect engine components, bodywork and driver from extreme temperatures in a 3000bhp Vauxhall VX4/90 FD that achieves 220mph in quarter mile. The Red Victor 1 Racing Team, which recently achieved a blistering 6.59 quarter mile, is using a broad range of Zircotec products including ThermoHold® ceramic coatings and ZircoFlex® heat shield materials as durable and effective heat management solutions for its very harsh application. Fully road legal right down to the tyres, wipers, horn and lights, Red Victor 3 is the latest drag racing creation from Andy Frost’s official VXR team. This incarnation of a 1972 Vauxhall VX4/90 FD uses an 8.8 litre Chevrolet engine, boosted by turbos – meaning exhaust temperatures can reach 787°C. This heat, trapped in an enclosed engine bay can cause reliability issues or inflict damage to surrounding parts and paint. Zircotec’s solution was to coat a range of engine components including the turbocharger, exhaust and carbon composite air duct as well as protecting body panels and paint with its ZircoFlex heatshield material. With, a 64 percent surface temperature reduction being achieved by using a single layer of ZircoFlex and a triple layer raising the protection to 84 percent, the benefits of the firm’s flexible heatshield were clear to the team; "I would not run a turbocharged car without using the benefits of ZircoFlex's heat reduction properties," says Andy Frost, engineer and driver of the car. "The product is better than anything else I've ever used for heat management on body panels, ducts and bulkheads." ZircoFlex heatshield material, available in a range of sizes, can be cut and folded to shape fit in the most awkward location and solve heat problems once and for all. "The paint is still on the car in the places I've applied it," adds Frost. "That includes under the bonnet, on the bulkhead and floor areas. My feet don't get hot and the carpet isn't melted!" "Though Frost’s car is an extreme example, many classic and performance car owners suffer the effects of heat both underbonnet and in the cockpit that could be eradicated through the use of heat management products such as ZircoFlex," adds Peter Whyman, sales director for Zircotec. In addition to the reliability gains, Frost has benefitted from the performance benefits achieved through the use of thermal barriers. "By retaining heat in the exhaust, the gases pulse faster through the system offering a small but worthwhile gain," claims Whyman. "This is more relevant with turbo engines, where the faster moving gases help the turbo to spool up quicker and reduce lag." For Frost, the plan is to continue to lower the time: "Now that we have attained the world record, we plan on lowering it bit by bit," concludes Frost. "This will happen alongside our championship efforts in the 2012 MSA Pro Modified championship, where we hope to get ourselves familiar with racing again. By the end of the year we expect that the car is at a level to compete properly for next year’s MSA Pro Modified championship." Good luck chaps!
